Apple Growers Meet CM Sukhu, Push for Import Duty & Land Policy

Apple Producers Present Demands to Himachal Chief Minister

A delegation from the Himachal Pradesh Seb Utpadak Sangh met with Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu in Shimla on Monday. Former Theog MLA Rakesh Singha led the group. They presented a detailed charter of demands to the state government.

Key Demands from the Growers

The apple producers made several critical requests during their meeting. They urged the government to impose a 100% import duty on apples. This measure aims to protect local growers from foreign competition.

They also demanded a policy to provide land to landless farmers. This would support agricultural livelihoods across the state.

Additionally, the delegation called for expert reviews of ongoing four-lane construction projects. They specifically mentioned IIT Roorkee, IIT Mandi, and the Geological Survey of India as potential reviewing bodies.

Concerns Over Infrastructure Projects

The growers raised serious issues related to four-lane construction work. They reported damage to homes and road subsidence in affected areas. Locations like Shimla's Bhattakuffer and Chalonthi were highlighted.

A lack of accountability and relief for affected families was a major point of contention. The delegation stressed the need for proper compensation and safety measures.

Government Response and Support

Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu assured the delegation that the state government would consider their requests. He listened attentively to their concerns during the meeting.

Horticulture Minister Jagat Singh Negi was also present. His attendance underscored the government's focus on agricultural issues.

Background of the Protest

Earlier, the Kisan Sabha and Seb Utpadak Sangh organized a march from Talland to the state secretariat in Shimla. This demonstration aimed to amplify their demands before the meeting with the chief minister.

The march drew attention to the pressing needs of apple growers and farmers in Himachal Pradesh. It set the stage for the productive discussions that followed.
