Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday announced that the state's Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) unit aims to raise Rs 12 crore from its party workers to provide relief to victims of the devastating floods that have hit the region. Speaking to reporters, Sarma said the collected funds would be specifically used to distribute clothes to women and children affected by the natural calamity.
Party Workers to Contribute
The Chief Minister emphasized that the contribution would come solely from BJP party workers, reflecting the organization's commitment to supporting affected communities. "We are targeting to collect Rs 12 crore from our party workers. The donation will be utilized for providing clothes to women and children," Sarma stated.
Flood Situation in Assam
Assam has been grappling with severe floods during the monsoon season, displacing thousands and causing widespread damage to property and infrastructure. The floods have affected numerous districts, with the Brahmaputra River and its tributaries overflowing. The state government and various organizations have been undertaking relief and rescue operations.
BJP's Relief Initiatives
The BJP's fundraising drive is part of broader efforts to assist flood victims. Party workers across the state have been mobilized to contribute voluntarily. Sarma's announcement underscores the political will to address the humanitarian crisis, with the funds earmarked for essential items.
"We are working closely with local administrations to ensure that the relief reaches the most vulnerable. The party is committed to standing with the people during this difficult time," the Chief Minister added.
Community Response
Local communities have praised the initiative, though some have called for more comprehensive measures to tackle recurring floods. Environmentalists demand long-term solutions such as improved drainage and flood management systems. Nonetheless, the immediate focus remains on providing basic necessities to those displaced.
The Assam BJP's target of Rs 12 crore is a substantial sum, indicating the scale of the disaster. The party hopes to meet or exceed the goal through contributions from its extensive network of workers across the state.
