Assam Opposition Forges United Front for Assembly Elections

In a significant political development, four opposition parties in Assam have announced a joint campaign for the upcoming assembly elections, setting the stage for a direct confrontation with the ruling BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA). The alliance, spearheaded by the Congress party, includes the Communist Party of India (Marxist), Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP), and the All Party Hill Leaders’ Conference (APHLC).

Joint Campaign Strategy Unveiled

State Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) president Gaurav Gogoi, who is contesting from Jorhat, revealed that the parties will undertake joint campaign meetings across Assam. "From now on, we will undertake joint campaign meetings across the state. Discussions on probable locations in upper Assam have already taken place, and we will expand to other parts as well," Gogoi stated.

He emphasized the timing of this move, saying, "We felt it was time to take our views together to the public. Hence, we will launch the joint campaign from now on." This coordinated effort marks a strategic shift as the opposition seeks to consolidate its voter base ahead of the polls.

Alliance Expansion and Objectives

The newly formed alliance is also in active discussions with the Raijor Dal, led by Akhil Gogoi. Gaurav Gogoi clarified, "We are sending a clear message that from today, we are coming together. But our doors are open, and we are in talks with others also." This indicates potential for further expansion of the opposition bloc.

AJP chief Lurinjyoti Gogoi articulated the alliance's primary goal: "We have joined hands to send a clear message to the people that we are united in our journey to oust the communal BJP. Our united journey has started." Similarly, APHLC chief Jones Ingti Kathar highlighted regional issues, noting that people in hill areas face deprivation in education and job opportunities, which motivated their decision to fight unitedly against the BJP.

Political Landscape and Seat-Sharing

CPM leader Suprakash Talukdar described the alliance as a "good beginning," reflecting optimism about its impact. On the electoral front, Congress has already named candidates for 42 seats, though seat-sharing talks among the allies are still in progress. Friendly contests are anticipated in a few constituencies as the parties finalize their strategies.

In the 126-member Assam Legislative Assembly, the current composition is as follows:

  • BJP: 64 MLAs
  • Allies: AGP (9), UPPL (7), BPF (3)
  • Congress: 26 MLAs
  • AIUDF: 15 MLAs
  • CPM: 1 MLA
  • Independent: 1 MLA

This political realignment comes at a crucial juncture, with the opposition aiming to leverage unity to challenge the BJP's dominance. The joint campaign is expected to intensify in the coming weeks, focusing on key issues such as governance, development, and social equity to sway voters in the highly competitive electoral landscape of Assam.
