Violence Erupts in Assam's Karbi Anglong: 2 Dead, Internet Suspended
Assam's Karbi Anglong violence: 2 dead, internet cut

Tensions over land rights in Assam's hill districts have exploded into deadly violence, claiming two lives and prompting authorities to impose severe restrictions. The unrest, centered in the Karbi Anglong region, has led to a suspension of mobile internet and curfew-like measures as the state struggles to contain the situation.

Roots of the Conflict: Land and Autonomy

The core of the dispute lies in the Karbi community's long-standing opposition to alleged illegal settlements by non-tribal people. Protesters claim that professional and village grazing reserve lands, which are protected under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution guaranteeing tribal autonomy, are being encroached upon. This simmering issue reached a boiling point this week, with protests entering their third consecutive day on Wednesday, December 24, 2025.

Escalation and Casualties

The violence intensified in the Kheroni area and its surroundings. Clashes between tribal protesters and security forces turned fatal. One tribal protester lost his life due to police action. In a separate tragic incident, a non-tribal man was killed in a fire that also destroyed several shops. The Assam Director General of Police, Harmeet Singh, reported that 48 police personnel, including senior officers, were injured. He stated that protesters, armed with bows, arrows, stones, and crude bombs, attacked forces who were trying to secure a bridge.

Government Response and Ongoing Tensions

In response to the deteriorating law and order, the state government has taken drastic steps. Curfew-like restrictions have been enforced, and mobile internet services are suspended in both West Karbi Anglong and Karbi Anglong districts to prevent the spread of rumors. Authorities revealed that the situation worsened after misinformation about the arrest of a protest leader circulated widely. Despite the government announcing tripartite talks scheduled for December 26, violence continued unabated, necessitating additional security deployments. Urgent appeals for community restraint have been issued to prevent further escalation of the conflict.
