Kolkata: The West Bengal Police have suspended Baruipur Inspector-in-Charge Samar De and Sub-Inspector Ruidas following allegations of physical assault on BJP candidate Bishwajit Pal in South 24 Parganas. The incident occurred shortly after the declaration of the assembly election results, triggering a formal complaint and an internal inquiry.
Disciplinary Action Ordered
The suspension order was issued by Additional Director General (Law and Order) Ajay Mukund Ranade. According to the order, Samar De is placed under suspension with effect from May 8, pending a departmental enquiry into his conduct. During the suspension period, he will receive half of his basic pay and other admissible allowances proportionately. He will remain attached to the unit headquarters until a fresh transfer order is issued.
Viral Video Sparks Inquiry
A video clip went viral on social media, purportedly showing De and other officers dragging Pal and forcing him into a police vehicle. Although the authenticity of the footage has not been independently verified, it prompted an internal investigation by the state police. The video fueled public outrage and intensified scrutiny of police conduct during the post-election period.
Background of the Incident
According to BJP sources, the alleged assault occurred amid heightened post-poll tension in the constituency. While the Trinamool Congress reported unrest in the area, Pal claimed that the police targeted him without provocation. He further alleged that he was implicated in false cases as a means of harassment.
Political Reactions
The incident has drawn sharp reactions from political circles. The BJP has condemned the police action, demanding a thorough investigation and strict punishment for the officers involved. The ruling Trinamool Congress has not officially commented on the suspension but has previously cited law and order challenges in the region.
Next Steps in the Investigation
The departmental proceeding against the suspended officers will examine their conduct and determine if disciplinary measures beyond suspension are warranted. The police have assured a fair and transparent inquiry. Meanwhile, the BJP candidate has welcomed the suspension as a first step toward justice but called for a wider probe into police conduct during the elections.
