Violence Erupts at Bhojpuri Cultural Events in Bihar, Police Forced to Intervene
Two major cultural events in Bihar were severely disrupted by crowd violence on Wednesday night, with unruly behavior leading to stone-pelting, chair-throwing, and police intervention in both Muzaffarpur and Vaishali districts. The incidents have raised serious concerns about crowd management and security at public gatherings in the state.
Muzaffarpur Mela Descends into Chaos During Khesari Lal Yadav Performance
At the Babu Arjun Mela in Muzaffarpur, a performance by popular Bhojpuri singer Khesari Lal Yadav turned violent when fans attempted to breach security barriers to take selfies with the artist on stage. The situation quickly escalated as private guards used sticks to restrain the crowd, triggering retaliatory stone-pelting toward the stage.
Several people sustained injuries during the scuffle, forcing Khesari Lal Yadav to abandon his performance midway through the show. The mela was organized by former BJP MLA Ramsurat Rai, who claimed the situation spiraled out of control after attendees broke through police barricades, ultimately leading to program cancellation that further angered the crowd.
Previous Disturbance at Same Venue Just Two Days Earlier
Notably, this was not the first disturbance at the same event. Just two days prior on March 28, female orchestra dancers engaged in a heated argument during a stage performance that escalated into a physical altercation. Dancers were seen punching each other and pulling hair before organizers switched off stage lights and halted the program.
Videos of this earlier clash circulated widely on social media platforms, highlighting ongoing security concerns at the venue. Muzaffarpur SSP Kantesh Kumar Mishra placed responsibility squarely on the organizers, stating that despite deployment of 150 police personnel and a DSP, the situation became unmanageable.
"Those involved are being identified through video footage, and an FIR will be registered and action will be taken against them," Mishra emphasized, indicating legal proceedings would follow the investigation.
Vaishali Mahotsav Also Witnesses Violent Outbreak
In a separate incident at the Vaishali Mahotsav, chaos erupted approximately thirty minutes after folk singer Kalpana Patwari took the stage for a Bhojpuri night performance. Audience members allegedly began throwing chairs, creating widespread panic among attendees.
Police were forced to conduct a baton charge to disperse the unruly crowd and restore order at the venue. This second incident on the same night further underscored the challenges of crowd regulation at cultural events across Bihar.
Broader Context of Crowd Management Failures in Bihar
These violent outbreaks follow a recent tragic incident in Nalanda district where an unruly gathering at a temple led to a stampede that claimed nine lives. The pattern of events highlights systemic issues with crowd control and event management throughout the state.
Authorities now face increasing pressure to implement stricter security protocols and better planning for public gatherings, particularly those featuring popular performers that attract large, enthusiastic crowds. The incidents have sparked discussions about the need for improved coordination between event organizers and law enforcement agencies to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
