BJD Demands Immediate Dismissal of Odisha Mines Minister Over Illegal Extraction Allegations
Political tensions escalated in Odisha on Monday as the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) called for the immediate dismissal of Mines Minister Bibhuti Bhushan Jena. The opposition party accused him of direct involvement in widespread illegal sand and mineral theft across the state.
Enforcement Directorate Search Fuels Allegations
The BJD based its demand on revelations from a recent Enforcement Directorate (ED) search conducted in Ganjam district. Party officials claimed the search exposed the participation of Sunil Patra, the minister's officially authorized representative, in these unlawful activities.
Addressing a press conference at the BJD headquarters, spokesperson Lenin Mohanty launched a sharp attack on the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). He accused the BJP government of enabling large-scale theft of sand, morrum, and stones during its tenure.
"The ED's recovery has brought to light the true face of the mines minister," Mohanty stated emphatically. He argued that the evidence pointed to systemic corruption within the mining department.
Minister Jena's Firm Response
Responding to the serious allegations, Mines Minister Bibhuti Bhushan Jena issued a strong denial. He emphasized the government's commitment to cracking down on illegal mining operations.
"We will not allow any sand mafia to operate in the state," Jena declared. "The government is determined to take stringent action against them to curb illegal trade."
His statement aimed to reassure the public about administrative vigilance. However, it did little to calm the political storm brewing in Bhubaneswar.
Growing Political Friction Over Mineral Resources
The confrontation highlights growing political friction surrounding illegal mineral extraction in Odisha. The state's rich mineral resources have long been a source of both economic opportunity and controversy.
Opposition parties have increasingly focused on mining irregularities as a key political issue. They argue that illegal extraction not only causes environmental damage but also represents significant revenue loss for the state.
The BJD's demand for ministerial dismissal represents a significant escalation in this ongoing political battle. It puts pressure on the BJP government to demonstrate concrete action against mining irregularities.
Political observers note that such allegations could influence public perception ahead of future elections. The mining sector's regulation remains a sensitive topic for voters across Odisha's mineral-rich regions.
