BJP Polling Agent Arrested in Kerala Over Alleged Booth Altercation
In a dramatic turn of events during the recent polling in Kerala, police in Thrissur have arrested a BJP polling agent following allegations made by UDF candidate T N Prathapan. The incident occurred at the Kandassankadavu polling booth in the Manaloor constituency, sparking a heated political controversy just as voting was underway.
Details of the Alleged Confrontation
According to the complaint filed by UDF candidate T N Prathapan, he was visiting the polling booth at St Mary's Convent Girls High School in Kandassankadavu to assess the progress of voting when he was allegedly blocked by the BJP polling agent. Prathapan further claimed that the agent attempted to manhandle him during the confrontation, creating significant disruption at the polling station.
The police subsequently arrested Jayaprakashan (62) of Mangattukara Chulliyil, who was serving as the BJP's polling agent at booth number 205. The arrest was made based on a formal complaint filed by the presiding officer of the polling station, who documented the incident in detail.
Legal Charges Filed
Police have registered the case under Section 126(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and Section 131 of the Representation of the People Act. According to the First Information Report (FIR), the accused allegedly stopped the candidate who had legitimately entered the booth to monitor voting progress and disrupted the polling process by creating a ruckus.
The legal provisions invoked in this case are significant. Section 126(2) of BNS deals with offenses related to obstructing public servants in discharge of their duties, while Section 131 of the Representation of the People Act specifically addresses misconduct at polling stations during elections.
BJP Candidate Denies Allegations
In a swift response, BJP candidate K K Aneeshkumar from the Manaloor constituency has categorically denied all allegations against his party's polling agent. Aneeshkumar presented a completely different version of events, alleging that it was actually Prathapan and those accompanying him who had hurled abuses at the polling agent and physically assaulted him.
"Our polling agent was simply performing his duty when he was verbally abused and assaulted by Prathapan and his group," Aneeshkumar stated, challenging the narrative presented by the UDF candidate and the subsequent police action.
Political Implications
This incident has added fuel to the already heated political atmosphere in Kerala during election season. The arrest of a polling agent from a major national party like the BJP during active polling hours represents a significant development that could have repercussions beyond the immediate constituency.
Political observers note that such incidents during elections are particularly sensitive as they can influence voter perception and potentially affect the fairness of the electoral process. The conflicting narratives from the two major political camps highlight the intense competition characteristic of Kerala's political landscape.
Local authorities have assured that the investigation will proceed impartially, with due consideration given to all evidence and witness statements from both sides of the political divide. The case is expected to be closely monitored by election authorities as it unfolds in the coming days.
