BJP Unveils Comprehensive Sankalp Patra for 2026 Assam Assembly Elections
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has officially released its Sankalp Patra for the upcoming 2026 Assam Legislative Assembly elections, outlining a vision for a secure and developed Assam. The manifesto, presented as a detailed blueprint for governance, includes several significant commitments aimed at addressing key state issues and building on past achievements.
Key Promises: UCC, Employment, and Flood Control
Among the headline pledges, the BJP has committed to implementing a Uniform Civil Code (UCC) across Assam, with specific exclusions for areas under the Sixth Schedule to protect tribal customs. This move is positioned as a step toward legal uniformity and social harmony.
On the economic front, the party promises to create two lakh new jobs, targeting youth unemployment and fostering economic growth. Additionally, a massive Rs 18,000 crore flood management plan is proposed to tackle Assam's perennial flooding, aiming for a flood-free state through infrastructure and mitigation measures.
Education and Healthcare Expansion
The manifesto introduces a One District, One Institution model to enhance higher education and healthcare infrastructure statewide. This initiative seeks to decentralize access, ensuring each district has dedicated institutions to improve quality and availability of services.
Economic Progress and Central Support
Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, during the manifesto launch, highlighted Assam's economic strides under BJP rule. She noted a threefold increase in GDP over the last decade and a rise in per capita income, attributing this growth to effective governance and policies.
Sitharaman also emphasized increased central funding and infrastructure development, underscoring the BJP's focus on leveraging national resources for state advancement. The party is campaigning for a third consecutive term, banking on its track record and these new promises.
Political Context and Opposition Challenge
The BJP faces a determined challenge from the Congress, which aims to mount a strong electoral campaign. The upcoming polls are set to be a critical test of the BJP's governance model and its ability to deliver on these ambitious commitments.
With the Sankalp Patra now public, the political discourse in Assam is intensifying, focusing on issues like legal reform, job creation, and disaster management as voters prepare to make their choice.
