BJP-Backed APMC Board Disqualified in Amravati

Amravati: In a significant political development, the entire board of directors of the Anjangaon Surji Agricultural Produce Market Committee (APMC), considered the only BJP-backed market committee in Amravati district, has been disqualified. The order was issued by District Deputy Registrar of Co-operatives Shankar Kumbhar following the verdict in Appeal Nos. 07 and 08/2025, announced on April 24.

Reasons for Disqualification

A total of 17 directors have been declared ineligible for multiple violations, including irregular expenditure, breach of provisions under the Maharashtra Agricultural Produce Marketing (Development and Regulation) Act, 1963, failure to approve the budget within the stipulated time, and violations of bylaws. The order also cited non-compliance with directives under Section 40(e) issued by the Directorate of Marketing, along with breaches of the Maharashtra APMC Election Rules, 2017. Under Rule 10(1)(i), all 17 directors were disqualified.

Political Fallout

The action follows complaints filed by political opponents Sharad Sable, Sudhir Adhau, and Vinayak Wagh, alleging financial irregularities and procedural lapses by the board. The development is being seen as a setback for the BJP, as the Anjangaon Surji APMC was regarded as its only stronghold in this space. With the board's disqualification, the appointment of an administrator to run the committee is likely.

Former chairman Jayant Sable alleged political interference, claiming the board had executed development works worth crores for farmers. He termed the action a conspiracy by opponents to stall progress and said the decision would be challenged before higher authorities. Observers are now watching whether the disqualified board seeks legal relief and how the situation unfolds in the coming days.
