BJP Secures Haryana MLAs in Chandigarh Hotel for Rajya Sabha Elections
In a strategic move ahead of the Rajya Sabha elections scheduled for March 16, the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has relocated its Haryana MLAs to the JW Marriott hotel in Chandigarh. This action aims to ensure party discipline and prevent any potential cross-voting, mirroring similar precautions taken by the opposition Congress party.
Political Maneuvering Intensifies
The MLAs were initially gathered at Haryana Niwas for a breakfast meeting before being transported to the hotel via bus. Key political figures, including Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini and Union Minister Manohar Lal Khattar, have also arrived at the location. Additionally, Gujarat Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi, appointed as the BJP observer for the Haryana Rajya Sabha elections, is present to oversee proceedings.
The BJP holds 48 seats in the Haryana Legislative Assembly, with elections set for two Rajya Sabha positions. To secure a win, a candidate requires 31 first-preference votes. The BJP's nominee, Sanjay Bhatia, is anticipated to achieve this threshold comfortably, given the party's majority.
Congress Takes Preemptive Measures
In response to concerns about MLA poaching, the Congress party had previously moved its 31 MLAs to Kufri in Shimla. The party plans to conduct training sessions for its legislators to reinforce voting protocols and party loyalty. This move underscores the high-stakes nature of the upcoming elections, where every vote is critical.
For the second Rajya Sabha seat, a competitive race is expected between Independent candidate Satish Nandal, who enjoys support from the BJP and other Independents, and Congress candidate Karamvir Singh Boudh. This contest highlights the intricate alliances and strategies at play in state politics.
Election Preparations in Full Swing
On Saturday, the BJP further solidified its election machinery by appointing Cabinet Minister Krishna Bedi as the election agent. Minister Ranbir Singh Gangwa and MLA Yogender Rana will serve as counting agents, while Sports Minister Gaurav Gautam and MLA Sunil Sangwan have been designated as party representatives and agents. These appointments are designed to streamline the election process and ensure compliance with electoral regulations.
The political landscape in Haryana remains tense as both major parties implement stringent measures to safeguard their votes. With the Rajya Sabha elections just days away, all eyes are on Chandigarh and Shimla, where the fate of these crucial seats will be determined.
