Karnataka BJP leader Vijayendra has demanded that Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar provide details regarding the recent release of Cauvery water, alleging it was done to maintain ties with an alliance partner. Vijayendra questioned whether Shivakumar had coordinated with the Maharashtra government to ensure water releases into Karnataka.
BJP's Allegations
Speaking to reporters, Vijayendra said, "The people of Karnataka have a right to know why water was released from the Cauvery reservoir. Was it to appease an alliance partner? We demand a full explanation." He further asked if Shivakumar had any prior communication with Maharashtra authorities regarding the water release.
DK Shivakumar's Response
Shivakumar dismissed the allegations, stating that water releases were based on technical assessments and legal requirements. "We follow the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal's orders and the Supreme Court's directives. There is no political consideration," he said.
Political Implications
The issue has sparked a political row, with the BJP accusing the ruling Congress of compromising Karnataka's interests. The Cauvery water sharing has been a contentious issue between Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, and any release often triggers political reactions.
