BJP Condemns DMDK-DMK Alliance, Invokes Late Vijayakant's Legacy
In Chennai, the Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK) has faced sharp criticism from the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), particularly the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), for its decision to form an alliance with the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK). The BJP's Tamil Nadu unit launched a scathing attack, alleging that the soul of the late DMDK founder, Vijayakant, would never forgive the party's current leadership for this move.
BJP's Strong Stance on Social Media
The official X handle of the BJP's Tamil Nadu unit posted a message highlighting Vijayakant's historical opposition to DMK–Congress alliances. "Captain Vijayakant opposed DMK–Congress alliance till his last breath. But the party he founded has joined hands with the evil force today," the statement read, accompanied by the hashtag "Captain's soul will not forgive". This emotional appeal underscores the BJP's attempt to frame the alliance as a betrayal of Vijayakant's core principles and political legacy.
AIADMK's Mixed Reactions
AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami (EPS) adopted a more measured tone, downplaying the significance of the DMDK–DMK alliance deal. When questioned about DMDK's decision, EPS remarked, "An alliance is a choice of political parties and their leaders." However, other AIADMK leaders were less diplomatic, criticizing the move and predicting it would weaken the DMDK. Former minister O. S. Manian responded to DMDK general secretary Premallatha Vijayakant's analogy of "fruit has fallen into sweetened milk" by cautioning that whether it proves to be milk or poison will only be revealed in time.
Opposition and Support from Other Parties
Tamil Maanila Congress president G. K. Vasan voiced strong opposition, stating that DMDK's decision goes against the sentiments of the people of Tamil Nadu. "Vijayakant never allied with DMK," he emphasized, reinforcing the narrative of betrayal. Meanwhile, TVK leaders criticized Premallatha Vijayakant for aligning with DMK, viewing it as a contentious shift.
On the other hand, parties within the DMK alliance welcomed the move, claiming it solidifies their position. MDMK general secretary Vaiko described DMDK's inclusion as "sweet news" that would further strengthen the DMK alliance. VCK president Thol Thirumavalavan noted that this development fulfills the dream of late Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi, saying, "What he wished in 2016 came true now." Tamil Nadu Congress Committee (TNCC) president K. Selvaperunthagai expressed satisfaction, recalling that he had advocated for DMDK's inclusion two years ago, believing it would benefit their alliance.
Political Implications and Future Outlook
The DMDK-DMK alliance has sparked a heated debate in Tamil Nadu's political landscape, with reactions ranging from outright condemnation to enthusiastic support. As parties gear up for the upcoming assembly election, this alliance is poised to influence voter sentiments and alliance dynamics. The BJP's emotional rhetoric, coupled with mixed responses from other key players, highlights the complex interplay of legacy, strategy, and public perception in state politics.
