BJP state president B Y Vijayendra on Thursday said the party would raise the Bidadi township issue during the ongoing legislative session, alleging that Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar has been in a hurry to push the project since taking office in 2023.
BJP alleges rushed decision-making
Speaking to reporters in Bengaluru, Vijayendra claimed that Shivakumar, who also holds the Bengaluru Development portfolio, is trying to fast-track the township project without proper due diligence. “Ever since D K Shivakumar became Deputy Chief Minister in 2023, he has been in a hurry to push the township project,” Vijayendra said.
The BJP leader accused the Congress government of ignoring earlier concerns raised by local residents and opposition parties. He asserted that the project would be discussed in detail during the assembly session to ensure transparency.
Background of the project
The Bidadi township project, proposed nearly two decades ago, aims to develop a satellite town on the outskirts of Bengaluru. It has faced multiple delays due to land acquisition issues, environmental clearances, and political disagreements. The project is expected to decongest Bengaluru by providing residential and commercial spaces in Bidadi, located about 30 km from the city center.
In 2023, the Congress government revived the project, with Shivakumar taking a personal interest. However, BJP leaders have questioned the haste, pointing to potential irregularities in land deals and lack of consultation with stakeholders.
Political ramifications
Vijayendra’s announcement comes amid a charged political atmosphere in Karnataka, with both parties trading barbs over development projects. The BJP has been critical of the Congress administration’s handling of urban development, particularly in Bengaluru.
“We will demand a white paper on the Bidadi project and seek answers on why the government is bypassing standard procedures,” Vijayendra added. He also hinted at possible protests if the government does not provide satisfactory explanations.
Shivakumar, meanwhile, has defended the project, stating it will create jobs and boost infrastructure. He accused the BJP of playing politics over development. The Congress government is expected to present its case in the assembly, with a detailed response likely from the Deputy CM.
