BJP Unveils Fourth Candidate List for Bengal Polls, Key Nominations Announced
BJP's Fourth Bengal Candidate List: Key Nominations Revealed

BJP Announces Fourth Round of Candidates for West Bengal Assembly Elections

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in West Bengal on Tuesday made public its fourth roster of nominees for the upcoming state assembly elections, covering thirteen crucial constituencies. This latest announcement leaves only six out of the total 294 assembly seats without an official BJP candidate as the political battleground heats up. The list features several strategic appointments aimed at consolidating key voter bases across the state.

Strategic Nominations in Matua and North Bengal Regions

In a significant move, the party has fielded Soma Thakur, wife of Union Minister Shantanu Thakur, from the Matua community-dominated Bagdah constituency. This nomination is seen as a direct appeal to the influential Matua vote bank. Furthermore, the BJP has brought former Congress leader Santosh Pathak into its fold, nominating him from the prestigious Chowringhee seat in Kolkata.

The party also made notable changes in its candidate lineup, dropping incumbent Natabari MLA Mihir Goswami and replacing its previous Maynaguri candidate. In a strategic shift, former IPS officer Debashis Dhar has been nominated from Sonarpur North, despite his 2024 Lok Sabha nomination from Birbhum being cancelled during scrutiny due to a missing "no dues certificate."

Consolidating Rajbanshi and Scheduled Caste Support in North Bengal

Following the recent induction of Greater Cooch Behar People's Association leader Bangshibadan Barman into the BJP, the party has nominated two functionaries from the Greater Cooch Behar movement. Girija Shankar Roy will contest from Natabari, while Asutosh Barma has been fielded from Sitai. Both joined the BJP alongside Barman last week.

This move represents a calculated effort to strengthen the party's support among Rajbanshi communities and Scheduled Castes in north Bengal, even though opposition leader Suvendu Adhikari had previously indicated that Barman himself would not be contesting. The nomination of Asutosh Barma reportedly surprised some party workers, indicating the strategic nature of these selections.

Candidate Changes and Political Realignments

The BJP demonstrated its willingness to adapt its strategy by changing its Maynaguri candidate from Kaushik Roy to Dalim Roy in this fourth list. This decision came after protests from some party workers following Kaushik Roy's initial nomination. Bengal BJP president Samik Bhattacharya explained that the change was made through democratic processes after leadership determined it would benefit the people.

In Chowringhee, the party has placed its trust in Santosh Pathak, who switched allegiance from Congress just a week before the announcement. Pathak, a four-time Kolkata Municipal Corporation councillor who contested the seat on a Congress ticket in 2021, explained his decision, stating he had received earlier offers from Trinamool Congress but found BJP to be the only force capable of challenging the ruling party in Bengal.

Additional Nominations and Election Developments

The BJP also nominated journalist Manab Guha from Memari constituency, broadening its representation across professional backgrounds. Meanwhile, significant election-related developments continue, with Union Home Minister Amit Shah scheduled to be present during Suvendu Adhikari's nomination filing for the Bhowanipore seat on Thursday.

In a separate development, Adhikari has alleged that phones of Bengal BJP leaders are being tapped and has reported this concern to the Election Commission. As the election process intensifies, these candidate announcements and political maneuvers highlight the BJP's strategic approach to the West Bengal assembly polls, with only a handful of seats remaining to be finalized in their candidate selection process.
