BJP's Tripunithura Disappointment: Lotus Symbols Painted Over for Ally Twenty20
As election season approaches in Kerala, political symbols appearing on streets often provide an early indication of the electoral landscape. In the temple town of Tripunithura, a significant shift is underway: the lotus symbol of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is making way for the jackfruit symbol of its ally, Twenty20. This change reflects a surprising decision by the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) that has left BJP workers disheartened.
From Municipal Victory to Constituency Allocation
Following the municipal elections, BJP workers painted lotus symbols on compound walls across Tripunithura, anticipating their reuse during the upcoming assembly poll campaign. The NDA's decision to allocate the Tripunithura constituency to its ally Twenty20, however, came as an unexpected blow. This move has transformed what was seen as a moment of political consolidation into one of disappointment for the BJP's grassroots cadre.
Historically, the NDA achieved a milestone by winning the Tripunithura municipal council with a single-seat majority, marking its first such victory in the area. Alongside earlier successes in Palakkad and Pandalam municipalities, Tripunithura was viewed as a crucial step in the BJP's political growth within Kerala. Many BJP workers considered the constituency politically favorable for their party, making the allocation to Twenty20 particularly jarring.
Grassroots Discontent and Political Implications
A senior BJP functionary, speaking anonymously, expressed frustration over the decision. "The decision is quite unfortunate. A BJP candidate could have helped the party strengthen its grassroots connection with voters," he stated. He recalled past efforts, such as fielding prominent leaders like Thuravur Vishwambharan in 2016 and K S Radhakrishnan in 2021, even when the party's prospects were weaker.
The functionary also highlighted Prime Minister Narendra Modi's 2016 assembly election campaign launch from the Puthiyakavu temple ground, which drew thousands of supporters. "Now that the party has grown to the level of ruling the municipality, it is disappointing that we cannot work for a party candidate," he added.
Many grassroots workers share similar sentiments, with some even alleging that the seat-sharing arrangement across the state raises suspicions of a political understanding between the CPM-led Left Democratic Front (LDF) and the NDA. They argue that BJP's municipal victory in Tripunithura in 2025 resulted from intense grassroots work and organizational weaknesses in the United Democratic Front (UDF) camp. Several seats were won by narrow margins, indicating that the political contest remains highly competitive.
Impact on Campaign Dynamics
With BJP cadres visibly demotivated by the state leadership's decision, the situation has impacted NDA's campaigns in Tripunithura. This demotivation gives a significant edge to other political fronts, potentially altering the electoral dynamics in the constituency. Actor-turned-entrepreneur Anjali Nair of Twenty20 will now contest from Tripunithura, a move that underscores the shifting alliances and strategic calculations within the NDA.
The replacement of lotus symbols with jackfruit on Tripunithura's walls symbolizes more than just a change in party representation; it highlights the complexities of coalition politics and the challenges of maintaining grassroots morale in a competitive electoral environment.
