Chhattisgarh Government Implements Strict LPG Rationing Measures for Commercial Consumers
In a significant move to address rising demand and ensure equitable distribution, the Chhattisgarh government has implemented comprehensive restrictions on liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) supply to commercial establishments across the state. The new policy caps commercial LPG consumption at just 20% of their previous month's usage, representing a substantial reduction in available supply for business operations.
Priority-Based Distribution System Established
The state administration has developed a detailed priority list for LPG distribution, placing critical institutions at the forefront of supply chains. Hospitals, educational institutions, and security forces occupy the highest positions on this priority ladder, ensuring these essential services maintain uninterrupted operations despite the broader supply constraints.
Food Secretary Reena Baba Saheb Kangale, who assessed LPG stock and distribution with regional heads of major oil companies, emphasized the need for a tighter, priority-based supply system throughout Chhattisgarh. "Under the revised system, commercial establishments will receive restricted refills, while critical institutions such as hospitals, schools, military and paramilitary camps, prisons, and government-run facilities will be prioritized," she stated in an official announcement.
Expanded Priority Categories and Supply Regulation
The priority distribution framework extends beyond healthcare and education to include several other essential services:
- Railway and airport canteens
- Social welfare institutions
- Animal feed production units
- Hotels and restaurants
While these establishments have been included in priority categories, their supply remains regulated based on actual availability, with allocations adjusted according to stock levels and demand patterns.
Ensuring Domestic Supply and Essential Services
State officials clarified that the primary objective behind these measures is dual-focused: ensuring uninterrupted domestic LPG supply for household cooking needs while simultaneously preventing disruption to essential commercial services that require gas for their operations.
To improve household access, the food department has established fixed timelines for refill bookings: 25 days in urban areas and 45 days in rural regions. These standardized timeframes aim to create more predictable supply cycles and reduce uncertainty for residential consumers across Chhattisgarh.
Enhanced Security and Monitoring Mechanisms
The state government has implemented several security and oversight measures to ensure orderly distribution:
- District administrations have been instructed to deploy police personnel and home guards at LPG distributor points and warehouses
- This security presence aims to prevent overcrowding and maintain proper order during distribution
- Distributors must keep helplines active and address consumer complaints promptly
A comprehensive daily monitoring system has been established, requiring oil companies to review commercial LPG stock levels and distribution patterns each day. These companies must submit detailed reports to the food department, creating accountability and transparency in the supply chain management.
