Coimbatore Elections: 183 Candidates Finalized for 10 Assembly Seats
The district election administration in Coimbatore announced on Thursday that a total of 183 candidates are now officially in the fray across the 10 assembly seats in the district. This final list comes after the completion of the nomination filing and withdrawal process, marking a crucial phase in the electoral preparations.
Nomination Scrutiny and Rejections
Initially, a staggering 450 nominations were filed across the 10 constituencies in Coimbatore. During the rigorous scrutiny process, 318 nominations were taken up for review. Out of these, 115 nominations were rejected due to various discrepancies, highlighting the strict adherence to electoral guidelines. Notably, the Thondamuthur constituency witnessed the highest number of rejections, with 27 nominations being turned down.
Candidate Withdrawals and Final Tally
Following the scrutiny, 20 eligible candidates chose to withdraw their nominations, which further streamlined the list. This reduction brought the final tally down to 183 candidates, setting the stage for a competitive electoral battle across the district.
Constituency-Wise Breakdown of Candidates
The distribution of candidates varies significantly across constituencies:
- Coimbatore South features the highest number of contenders at 31.
- Coimbatore North and Singanallur each have 28 candidates.
- Mettupalayam has 22 candidates.
- Thondamuthur has 21 candidates.
- Sulur has 15 candidates.
- Kavundampalayam has 14 candidates.
- Pollachi has 13 candidates.
- Kinathukadavu has the lowest number with only 5 candidates.
- Valparai has 6 candidates vying for the seat.

With the candidate list now finalized, election campaigning has hit high gear across all constituencies in Coimbatore district. Political parties and independent candidates are actively engaging with voters to secure support ahead of the polls.
Voter Demographics in Coimbatore
Coimbatore district boasts a substantial electorate, with 27.44 lakh voters in the final electoral list after the Special Intensive Revision (SIR). The voter composition includes:
- 13.22 lakh male voters
- 14.21 lakh female voters
- 534 transgender voters
Tirupur District Election Overview
In neighboring Tirupur district, the electoral landscape also sees significant activity. A total of 116 candidates are in the fray across its eight constituencies. Initially, 178 candidates had filed nominations, but 44 were rejected after scrutiny. Of the remaining 134 candidates, 18 withdrew their nominations, resulting in the final tally of 116.
Tirupur South leads with the highest number of contenders at 24, while Dharapuram has the lowest with only 9 candidates. The district is home to 19.83 lakh voters, comprising 9.57 lakh male voters, 10.26 lakh female voters, and 251 transgender voters.
