Farmer Survives 80-Foot Fall into Well in Coimbatore
A dramatic rescue operation unfolded in Coimbatore district on Friday. A 50-year-old farmer named Palanisamy was pulled from an 80-foot-deep well at Peedampalli near Sulur. The incident occurred on his own agricultural land.
Accidental Slip Leads to Terrifying Plunge
Palanisamy was standing close to the parapet wall of the well. He lost his footing and slipped. The farmer fell into the deep, dark shaft. The well contained water for at least 50 feet of its depth. It had no internal steps. Palanisamy also did not know how to swim, making the situation extremely dangerous.
"The well which had water for at least 50 feet, did not have any steps. And Palanisamy did not know to swim," explained Rajagopal, the Sulur fire station officer.
Quick Thinking and a Swift Rescue
Despite the shock and peril, Palanisamy managed to cling to the rough wall of the well. He shouted for help. Alert locals heard his cries and quickly informed the fire and rescue services at the Sulur fire station.
A team of firefighters rushed to the scene. They assessed the situation and prepared for a complex vertical rescue. Using strong ropes, a rescuer climbed down into the narrow well. They secured the frightened farmer in a rescue net. The team then carefully hoisted him back to the surface.
Rushed to Hospital for Treatment
Palanisamy sustained minor head injuries during the fall. A 108 ambulance was waiting at the site. Paramedics immediately transported him to a nearby hospital for evaluation and treatment. Medical staff reported that his condition is now stable. He is expected to recover fully from the harrowing ordeal.
This incident highlights the ever-present dangers on agricultural properties. It also showcases the bravery and efficiency of Tamil Nadu's fire and rescue personnel who respond to such emergencies.
