Congress Legislators Face Suspension in Assam Assembly

The Assam Legislative Assembly witnessed significant political drama on Tuesday as two Congress MLAs - Nurul Hooda and Sherman Ali Ahmed - were suspended from the House for the remainder of the winter session. This decisive action came after the privilege committee of the state assembly found both legislators guilty of serious misconduct directed at Deputy Speaker Numal Momin.

The Incident and Investigation

The controversy traces back to an incident that occurred in March during the previous assembly session. According to treasury bench MLAs, Hooda allegedly attacked Deputy Speaker Momin in the corridors of the assembly building. Momin himself had publicly alleged that he was physically assaulted by some Congress legislators.

The matter was referred to the privilege committee for thorough investigation. After examining evidence and hearing testimonies, the committee concluded that Hooda had indeed attacked Momin within the assembly premises. Meanwhile, Sherman Ali Ahmed was found guilty of using unparliamentary language toward the deputy speaker.

Political Fallout and Congress Reaction

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Chandra Mohan Patowary formally announced the suspension decision in the House, stating that the privilege committee had established the guilt of both Congress legislators beyond doubt. The suspension effectively bars both MLAs from participating in the remaining proceedings of the winter session.

The Congress party has strongly contested the decision, labeling it as biased and politically motivated. Party representatives have demanded that the assembly authorities release video footage of the alleged attack, claiming transparency would reveal the truth about what actually transpired during the March incident.

This development marks another chapter in the ongoing political tensions between the ruling party and opposition in the Assam Legislative Assembly, raising questions about decorum and political conduct within state legislative bodies.
