High-stakes alliance negotiations between the Congress party and the Raijor Dal encountered a significant setback on Thursday, as a marathon five-hour closed-door meeting concluded without any resolution. Inconclusive Meeting Leaves Akhil Gogoi Dejected
The discussions commenced at 11 am and extended deep into the afternoon, but ended with Akhil Gogoi emerging visibly disappointed. He provided a candid and pointed account of the proceedings to the media, highlighting critical disagreements that prevented a breakthrough. "Today's meeting remained inconclusive," Akhil stated, revealing that Congress had previously indicated through media channels an offer of 13 seats to Raijor Dal. However, he expressed surprise upon learning during the meeting that even this proposal lacked approval from the Congress high command in Delhi. "The list was made by Gaurav himself," Akhil added, underscoring the internal discord within the Congress party.
Seat-Sharing Disputes and Unresolved Proposals
Further complicating matters, Akhil Gogoi, who serves as the MLA from Sivasagar, disclosed that even within the proposed 13-seat offer, disputes had arisen over specific constituencies. "Even out of those 13 seats, they are now reluctant to give us the Gauripur seat. They have given us two alternatives — Mankachar and Algapur-Kaltichera," he explained. Additionally, the Raijor Dal had submitted its own proposal for 15 seats, which included the Naoboicha and Dhemaji assembly constituencies, but Congress had not agreed to these terms. The stalemate largely stems from Gaurav Gogoi's inability to secure endorsement from the national leadership, as he indicated a need to consult with Rahul Gandhi before proceeding.
Urgency Amid Fast-Approaching Nomination Deadlines
With nomination deadlines looming, Akhil Gogoi emphasized the pressing nature of the situation. "We don't have many days left for filing nominations. We don't have time," he warned, highlighting the urgency for a swift resolution. The talks are further complicated by both parties having already announced independent candidates for several assembly seats, a development that could make any last-minute seat-sharing arrangement increasingly difficult to untangle and implement effectively.
