The Communist Party of India (CPI) has demanded an immediate rollback of the recent price hike on commercial LPG cylinders. Led by CPI South Chennai District Secretary S K Siva, party workers gathered near the Panagal Building in Saidapet, Chennai, on Saturday, raising slogans against the BJP-led Union government. The protesters accused the government of burdening small businesses and the common people with the increased prices.
Protest Details
The demonstration saw a significant turnout of CPI members and supporters who voiced their discontent over the price revision. They held placards and chanted slogans condemning the central government's economic policies. The protest was peaceful and aimed at drawing attention to the hardships faced by commercial establishments that rely on LPG cylinders for their daily operations.
Impact on Small Businesses
Small restaurants, street vendors, and other commercial entities are among the most affected by the price hike. Many have expressed concerns over rising operational costs, which could lead to increased prices for consumers. The CPI argued that the government should prioritize the welfare of the common man over corporate interests.
Political Reactions
The CPI's demand for a rollback has garnered support from other opposition parties in Tamil Nadu. They have called for a united front against the price increase, which they claim is another example of the BJP-led government's anti-people policies. The protest in Saidapet is part of a larger statewide campaign by the CPI to mobilize public opinion against the decision.
The Union government, however, has defended the price hike, citing global market trends and the need to rationalize subsidies. Despite this, opposition parties continue to push for a reversal, arguing that it adds to the financial burden on ordinary citizens already grappling with inflation.
