Coimbatore: Members of the Communist Party of India (CPI) staged a protest near the district collectorate in the city on Thursday, condemning the Union government for the consecutive hikes in the prices of petrol, diesel, auto gas, and commercial cylinders. The protesting cadres, including CPI councillors of the corporation, raised slogans against the Union government.
CPI Leaders Speak Out
Speaking to reporters during the protest, M Arumugam, CPI state treasurer, said, “The Union government has successively hiked the prices of domestic cooking gas, commercial cooking gas, petrol, and diesel. The escalating fuel prices have subjected people across the country to severe distress and hardship. Every single family has been affected adversely.”
Criticism of Prime Minister Modi
He further accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of extending support to the USA in the ongoing war. “As far as Modi is concerned, he is acting as a significant ally to the United States. The joint attacks launched by Israel and the U.S. against Iran have resulted in the deaths of children and the razing of buildings to the ground, leaving that nation in rubble. However, Modi has not uttered a single word or even condemned their actions. If he cannot stand up for those lives, it is evident that he has no concern for Tamil Nadu or for India itself.”
Warning of Intensified Protests
CPI also warned that their protest will be intensified if the Union government does not act to prevent further price escalation. The party called on the government to roll back the price hikes and take measures to ease the burden on common citizens.
