The Election Commission of India has directed the National Investigation Agency (NIA) to take all necessary measures to prevent the use of bombs to disrupt the second phase of the West Bengal Assembly elections, scheduled for April 29. The first phase of polling in the state was conducted peacefully on April 23.
EC's Directive to NIA
In a clear move to ensure free and fair elections, the EC has instructed the NIA to coordinate with state police and central forces to thwart any attempts to use explosives to create disturbances during the upcoming polling. The directive comes amid intelligence inputs suggesting potential threats from anti-social elements.
Security Arrangements
Security has been tightened across all polling stations in the constituencies going to polls in the second phase. Additional forces have been deployed, and surveillance has been intensified. The EC has also urged voters to exercise their franchise without fear.
The second phase is crucial as it covers several sensitive areas. The Commission has emphasized that any disruption will be dealt with strictly. The NIA has been asked to maintain a high state of alert and ensure that no untoward incident mars the electoral process.
Voters in the affected constituencies are advised to cooperate with security personnel and report any suspicious activity. The EC has also appealed to political parties to maintain peace and avoid provocative statements.
