Former Chief Minister's Aide Makes Political Shift to Congress
A Suresh, the longtime personal assistant of former Kerala chief minister V S Achuthanandan, officially launched his election campaign in the Malampuzha constituency on Wednesday. This move came just one day after he formally joined the Congress party, marking a significant political realignment in the state.
Temple Visit Signals Changing Political Stance
Before commencing his campaign activities, Suresh visited the Emoor Bhagavathy temple to offer prayers. This temple visit itself represents a notable departure for someone who had been associated with communist ideology throughout his political career, indicating his evolving political stance and personal transformation.
From Independent Consideration to Congress Candidacy
Initially, there were strong indications that Suresh would contest the election as an independent candidate. However, Congress functionaries successfully persuaded the party's state leadership to select him as their official candidate, allowing him to contest under the party symbol. This strategic move by Congress leadership demonstrates their recognition of Suresh's political experience and local influence.
Suresh Explains His Decision to Switch Parties
In his statements to reporters, Suresh emphasized that his decision to join Congress was entirely his own initiative. He clarified that Congress had not approached him nor attempted to persuade him to join their ranks. "I had been contemplating for some time whether I should continue remaining loyal to CPM," Suresh explained. "However, the party had sidelined me. That is what ultimately led me to accept the UDF candidature."
Suresh made it clear that despite his political shift, former chief minister V S Achuthanandan would always remain in his heart and thoughts, acknowledging their long professional relationship and personal connection.
Confident Predictions for Election Outcome
Expressing confidence about his electoral prospects, Suresh stated: "It is a good feeling because this constituency, Malappuram, traditionally belongs to LDF. But history will be changing in the future. In this election, it will become a UDF constituency."
He further elaborated on his optimism: "We are receiving tremendous response from people because anti-incumbency factors are working all over Kerala. The United Democratic Front will be winning by a huge majority in the upcoming elections."
This political development represents a significant shift in Kerala's political landscape, with a key figure from the communist movement crossing over to the Congress party just as election campaigning intensifies across the state.
