Former MGP Leader Ketan Bhatikar Poised to Join Congress Party in Goa
In a significant political development in Goa, former Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party (MGP) functionary Ketan Bhatikar is reportedly set to join the Congress party in the near future. According to insiders within the Congress, Bhatikar has expressed strong intentions to align with the party, marking a potential shift in the regional political landscape.
Congress President Confirms Discussions
State Congress president Amit Patkar openly acknowledged that Bhatikar met with him on Tuesday to discuss his possible entry into the party. Patkar emphasized that the Congress follows a structured consultation process, from the block level up to the Pradesh Congress Committee, to evaluate such proposals.
"I will not deny that Ketan Bhatikar met me on Tuesday, and he is showing intentions of joining the Congress party," said Patkar. "Congress has a practice of consultations right from the block level to the Pradesh Congress Committee level, and I will discuss this proposal with the block of Ponda."
Background of Bhatikar's Move
Bhatikar recently parted ways with the MGP ahead of the recent zilla panchayat elections, citing internal differences as the primary reason for his departure. This move has sparked speculation about his political future, with Congress emerging as a likely destination.
Patkar revealed that he plans to meet with Ponda block workers on Thursday or Friday to deliberate on Bhatikar's offer. This step is crucial as it aligns with the party's democratic ethos and ensures grassroots involvement in decision-making.
Strategic Implications for Ponda Bypolls
In a related development, Bhatikar has already met with Congress general secretary Rajesh Verenkar, who is being considered as the party's candidate for the upcoming Ponda bypolls. Patkar highlighted the strategic importance of this meeting, framing the bypoll as a critical benchmark for the 2027 assembly elections.
"We met openly with Rajesh Verenkar. We want to defeat the BJP in Ponda. We are seeing the byelection as a benchmark that will decide the result for the 2027 assembly elections," Patkar stated.
He expressed confidence in the Congress's ability to secure a victory against the BJP in the Ponda bypolls, underscoring the party's focus on strengthening its position in the region. This potential alliance with Bhatikar could bolster Congress's efforts to challenge the ruling party effectively.
The political dynamics in Goa are evolving, with Bhatikar's anticipated switch highlighting ongoing realignments. As Congress prepares for the Ponda bypolls, the inclusion of experienced leaders like Bhatikar may play a pivotal role in shaping the party's strategy and electoral prospects.
