The Piddi village unit of the Kisan Mazdoor Sangharsh Committee, Punjab, staged a protest on Thursday against the area's Member of Legislative Assembly, Manjinder Singh Lalpura, and the state government. The demonstration took place under tight security arrangements as protesters shouted slogans against the MLA and the ruling administration.
Allegations of corrupt vote-buying
Addressing the gathering, zone president Sukhwinder Singh Dugalwala accused the government of attempting to buy votes through corrupt means. He claimed that the recent distribution of Rs 1,000 to women was a tactic to gain electoral support. "The government has completely failed to control corruption, and drug abuse is spreading from house to house," Dugalwala said.
Demands for electricity and water
Committee leader Sukhwinder Singh raised specific grievances, questioning the MLA about the ongoing electricity crisis and the severe shortage of canal water affecting farmers. "Why is there an electricity crisis? Why are farmers facing a severe shortage of canal water?" he demanded. The protesters maintained that their boycott of the MLA would continue until the government addresses their demands.
Despite the protests, MLA Manjinder Singh Lalpura passed by the demonstrators, who continued to shout slogans against him and the state government. The Kisan Mazdoor Sangharsh Committee has vowed to persist with their agitation until their concerns are met.
