Farmers to Hold Day-Night Dharna Over C and D Land Issue

The Somwarpet Raitha Horata Samithi has announced a day-and-night dharna in front of the Deputy Commissioner’s office in Madikeri starting June 16 to demand resolution of the long-pending C and D land issue. The decision was made during a meeting at the Somwarpet Vokkaligara Sangha Hall.

Key Decisions and Grievances

The meeting, chaired by Horata Samithi president Suresh Chakravathry, addressed multiple problems faced by farmers, including C and D land notices, clearance of estates by forest officials, and other grievances. Farmers expressed frustration over the government’s alleged negligence despite previous protests and petitions.

“A massive protest was held in Madikeri earlier to resolve the C and D land issue. Somwarpet taluk was shut down following the farmers’ struggle. Hundreds of petitions have been submitted to officials, MLAs, ministers, MPs, and even the chief minister, but the problem remains unresolved,” Suresh stated.

Government Committee Report

Suresh recalled that the government had formed a committee to study the C and D land issue in the district, with a report due to the state by May 21. However, no update has been provided, and he questioned whether the report was completed and submitted.

He alleged that the forest department continues to harass farmers by issuing notices under Section 4, despite the government’s assurance to refrain from such actions until the report is submitted and reviewed. “These actions prove that the government is not supportive of farmers,” he claimed.

Specific Incidents and Demands

No action has been taken against forest department staff who destroyed coffee and cardamom crops of an elderly farmer couple in the Mukkodlu region. Suresh criticized both the Union and state governments for not stepping up to resolve the issue, and accused MLAs and MPs of insufficient attention. He described the study committee as a mere tactic to pacify protesting farmers.

The forum has called on all farmers to participate in the indefinite struggle to press for their demands.
