First Kuki-Zo village resettled in Manipur

Churachandpur: Khodang, a Kuki Zo village situated in the buffer zone bordering Churachandpur, Kakching and Bishnupur districts, was officially resettled on Thursday. It became the first Kuki-Zo village to witness residents returning after displacement due to the conflict that erupted on May 3, 2023.

Inauguration Ceremony

Saikot MLA Paolenlal inaugurated the resettlement by cutting a ribbon at a commemoration stone. This was followed by a dedication prayer led by pastor Zalal, marking the official return of the villagers to their homes.

Background of Displacement

The village was deserted on May 28, 2023, when an armed Meitei group allegedly attacked the village, forcing residents to flee and abandon their belongings, according to villagers. Out of over 40 households, most were torched, with only around eight houses spared. The village remained completely deserted for about three years, locals said.

Efforts Leading to Resettlement

Village chief Jamminlien Haokip stated that the resettlement was made possible through initiatives by MLA Paolenlal, the district administration, the concerned Sub-Divisional Officer (SDO), civil society organisation (CSO) leaders, and the village authority. Around 40 houses have been reconstructed, with about 10 more houses yet to be built under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) scheme, Haokip added.

“I am very happy as we could resettle from today because of the steps taken by district officials, CSOs, and the village chief. Now we will be able to pursue our normal livelihood activities,” Haokip said.

Formal Function

A formal inaugural function was held in the village with MLA Paolenlal attending as chief guest. Kuki civil society organisation leaders, student leaders, security forces, Kuki women leaders, and leaders of various chiefs’ associations were also present during the event.
