Forest Department Reclaims Land of Former MLA's Family in Shivamogga

In a shocking escalation of the land rights conflict in Karnataka's Malnad region, the family of veteran socialist leader and former MLA Konandur Lingappa is facing the loss of its ancestral property. This development marks a bitter irony, as Lingappa was a prominent champion of the 'Land to the Tiller' movement alongside legendary figures like Shantaveri Gopala Gowda.

Incident Details and Legal Background

The incident unfolded in Melinakadugodu village, Thirthahalli taluk, where forest officials from the Arasalu division entered survey numbers 48 and 51. Using heavy machinery, they dug border trenches through an old areca nut plantation. This land was originally granted to Lingappa's mother in 1964 and holds a legal 'Patta' status, but it is now categorised as forest encroachment by authorities.

The state government recently honoured the former MLA with the Devaraj Urs award for his service, adding to the family's sense of betrayal. Family members expressed deep distress, noting that while the land was partitioned among three children, the forest department moved to cancel the Khata for approximately 8.9 acres, escalating tensions to a new high.

Conflicting Claims and Official Response

A family member, who requested anonymity, alleged that officials destroyed pipelines and plantations on a tract of land they claimed was recently cultivated. However, forest department officials countered this, arguing that the area constitutes fresh encroachment and necessitated reclamation.

Speaking to reporters, Deputy Conservator of Forests GR Ajjaiah clarified the department's stance. He stated that the original allotted land remains intact, and the cancellation of tracts was pursued following court directions. Ajjaiah further noted that the reclamation of the fresh encroachment was conducted months ago, only after obtaining consent from Lingappa's son.

This situation highlights ongoing disputes over land rights and forest conservation in the region, with legal complexities and emotional stakes for the affected family.
