The Urban Development Department of Himachal Pradesh has yet to publish the notification of the newly elected Mayor and Deputy Mayor of the Solan Municipal Corporation (MC) in the state gazette, a week after their election. This delay has prevented the duo from formally assuming charge of their respective posts.
Election timeline and administrative vacuum
The tenure of the previous municipal corporation ended on April 21. Fresh elections were subsequently announced, but the civic body has remained largely dysfunctional for over two and a half months due to the delayed poll processes. Although the election was held on May 17, the results were declared only a fortnight later on May 31. The mayoral election itself concluded on July 2.
BJP state General Secretary Sanjeev Katwal criticized the state government for the prolonged delay, stating that the residents of Solan are directly suffering from the Congress government's administrative negligence. “Even after completion of the electoral process on July 2, the MC has not been formally constituted, hitting development works,” Katwal said.
Impact on civic services and public welfare
The absence of a formally constituted municipal corporation has severely affected the upkeep of civic amenities. Essential services such as timely waste collection and regulated water distribution have been disrupted as councillors are unable to execute their duties. Residents also face difficulties in securing essential certificates, which require the approval of elected officials.
Katwal alleged that the Congress government's administrative apathy and delays in decision-making have hampered the city's development. He demanded the immediate issuance of the gazette notification to complete the democratic process and enable the elected representatives to assume their duties.
Government response and public frustration
The Solan MC has been effectively inactive since mid-April. While the government has discussed alternative arrangements, no concrete steps have been taken to restore normal functioning. The delay has drawn sharp criticism from opposition parties and residents alike, who are calling for urgent action to resolve the administrative deadlock.
