Karnataka Minister Satish Jarkiholi stated on Tuesday that the state government will soon provide its opinion on a pro-Kannada resolution passed by the Belagavi City Corporation (BCC). The resolution, which was adopted following demands from Kannada organisations, has been forwarded to the government for review.
Government Response Awaited
Speaking to reporters in Belagavi, Jarkiholi said, “The government’s response is being awaited. Once we receive it, the stand of the BCC council on the demand raised by Kannada organisations will become clear.” He did not specify a timeline but assured that the process is underway.
Background of the Resolution
The BCC council had passed the resolution earlier this month, urging the state government to take steps to promote the Kannada language and culture in the border district of Belagavi. Kannada organisations have been pressing for measures such as making Kannada mandatory in official communications and ensuring its prominence in public spaces.
Belagavi, located in the border region with Maharashtra, has often been a focal point of linguistic tensions. The resolution is seen as an attempt to assert Kannada identity in the region.
Minister’s Assurance
Jarkiholi, who is the Minister for Municipal Administration, emphasised that the government is committed to addressing the concerns of Kannada activists. “We will take a decision that is in the best interest of the state and its people,” he added.
The development comes amid ongoing discussions about language policies in Karnataka, with several organisations advocating for stronger protections for Kannada.
