Several people have lost their lives as heavy rain lashed parts of Uttar Pradesh, prompting Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath to order immediate compensation of Rs 4 lakh each to the families of the deceased within 24 hours. The torrential downpour caused widespread flooding, damage to property, and disruption of normal life across multiple districts.
Casualties and Damage Reported
According to state government officials, at least 12 people died in rain-related incidents, including drowning, house collapses, and electrocution. The worst-hit areas include Lucknow, Kanpur, Varanasi, and Prayagraj, where waterlogging brought traffic to a standstill and submerged low-lying areas. The state's relief commissioner confirmed that teams have been deployed for rescue and relief operations.
CM's Directives for Immediate Relief
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath took stock of the situation in a high-level meeting and directed officials to ensure that compensation reaches the bereaved families without delay. He also instructed district magistrates to conduct a door-to-door survey to assess the damage and provide immediate assistance. "The state government stands with the affected families. No negligence will be tolerated in relief work," he said.
Impact on Infrastructure and Agriculture
Heavy rains also damaged roads, bridges, and power lines in several regions. Over 50 villages in eastern UP were cut off due to flooded roads. The agricultural department reported that standing crops, especially paddy and sugarcane, have been damaged over thousands of hectares. Farmers have been advised to file claims under the crop insurance scheme.
Weather Forecast and Precautionary Measures
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for several districts, predicting more heavy rain in the next 48 hours. The state government has asked people in vulnerable areas to move to safer locations and has set up relief camps in flood-prone zones. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has been kept on standby.
