Mansa Municipal Council Election Decided by Toss
First-time Independent councillor Bhushan Kumar Matti was elected president of the Mansa Municipal Council on Saturday after a tiebreaker toss. The election, held at Bachat Bhawan in Mansa, saw Matti and his rival, Independent councillor Arpit Singla, each secure 14 votes, leading to the unprecedented decision by lot.
How the Toss Unfolded
According to AAP MLA Dr. Vijay Singla, who confirmed the outcome, the winner was determined through a toss after both candidates polled equal votes. Matti emerged victorious in the coin flip. The 27-member council witnessed a unique voting pattern, with Matti backed by eight AAP councillors, three Independents, one Congress councillor, and the local MLA. Arpit Singla, supported by the opposition BJP, SAD, and Congress, had the backing of six BJP councillors, five SAD councillors, and two Congress councillors.
Other Office-Bearers Elected
BJP's Prem Sagar was elected senior vice-president, while AAP's Krishan Singh was chosen as vice-president. The elections for these posts were also closely contested but did not require a tiebreaker.
Tensions and Peaceful Conclusion
The situation remained tense throughout the day, with opposition leaders alleging that the ruling AAP might attempt to influence the outcome. However, the election concluded peacefully. The result marks a significant moment for Mansa, as an Independent councillor takes the helm of the municipal council.
