Indore Vegetable Vendors Stage Sit-In Protest Against Municipal Corporation
Vegetable vendors in Indore, operating under the banner of the Sanvid Nagar Sangharsh Samiti, staged a sit-in protest against the Indore Municipal Corporation (IMC) on Monday. The demonstration was organized to demand the release of their seized carts by the civic body, which has sparked significant tension in the area.
Decades of Operation Disrupted by Seizure
The protest follows an IMC removal drive that was initiated in response to numerous complaints from residents. These complaints highlighted issues such as traffic congestion, public drinking, and alleged misbehavior by vendors in the narrow lanes of Sanvid Nagar. Vendors expressed frustration over the sudden disruption of their long-standing operations.
"We have been operating here for 50 years. Suddenly, the IMC seized our carts and destroyed our livelihood," said a vendor named Neelam Khare, emphasizing the deep impact on their daily lives and economic stability.
Demands for a New Designated Space
The protesters are specifically demanding a designated space at Tilak Nagar Khadan, rather than the allocated hawker zone under the Bengali Bridge. They argue that this alternative location would better suit their needs and allow them to continue their businesses without causing the issues cited by residents.
Municipal Corporation's Response and Justifications
In response to the protest, IMC member Rajesh Udavat clarified that the vendors had been provided with space under the Bengali Bridge approximately a year ago. "We have been making announcements for four months. Residents provided footage of hooliganism and harassment, making the relocation necessary for public safety," Udavat stated, underscoring the corporation's commitment to addressing community concerns.
Additionally, corporation official Ankesh Birthariya added that the seized carts would be released in accordance with legal norms, indicating a potential resolution pathway while maintaining regulatory compliance.
