IUML Champions Interfaith Harmony with Renovation of Ancient Shiva Temple in Wayanad
In a powerful demonstration of communal unity, the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) has taken a leading role in renovating the ancient Thrikkaipatta Shiva Temple in Wayanad, Kerala. This initiative stands in stark contrast to the divisive political agendas often seen elsewhere, highlighting a true 'Kerala story' of cooperation and respect across religious lines.
A Gesture Rooted in Tradition and Compassion
IUML state president Panakkad Sadikali Shihab Thangal formally requested guidance for the temple renovation in a letter to Tharananellur Thekkiniyedathu Padmanabhan Unni Namboodirippad, the tanthri (chief priest) of hundreds of temples. This request was made during the traditional exchange of gifts and messages between Onam and Eid-ul-Fitr, underscoring the deep-rooted cultural bonds in the region.
Thangal emphasized in his letter that true harmony flourishes when people celebrate festivals together, transcending barriers of religion and caste. The tanthri responded by praising such gestures as exemplary acts of human compassion and friendship that set a positive precedent for society.
Support for Landslide Victims and Temple Restoration
The temple renovation is closely linked to IUML's broader humanitarian efforts. Prior to this year's Eid, the party successfully constructed and provided houses for landslide victims in Wayanad with widespread support from across Kerala. Notably, IUML gave priority to 14 Hindu families in the first phase of this rehabilitation project, allocating houses without a draw of lots.
IUML national general secretary P K Kunhalikutty reaffirmed the party's commitment, stating, "I had mentioned about it during the inauguration of the housing project itself, and we will stand by that commitment." He added that IUML would extend full support to fulfill the wishes of locals regarding places of worship.
Community Engagement and Leadership Assurance
Temple secretary Mohana Chandran Unnithan reported that IUML district leaders held a meeting in Kalpetta three days ago to assure support for the renovation. The temple, which spans 9.42 acres, was visited by IUML leaders during the foundation stone ceremony of the housing project. Unnithan expressed deep appreciation, noting, "We have always lived in harmony and we deeply appreciate this gesture."
Representatives of Thangal, including U K Mammadisha (Kondotty municipal chairman), N C Aboobacker, and Naseem Pulikkal, personally visited the tanthri to deliver Eid gifts such as new clothes and greetings, symbolizing enduring bonds of friendship.
A Model for Social Cohesion
This initiative by IUML not only addresses the physical restoration of a historic temple but also reinforces the values of mutual respect and communal solidarity. In an era where religious sites are sometimes politicized, the renovation of the Thrikkaipatta Shiva Temple serves as a beacon of hope, showcasing how political and community leaders can work together to foster peace and unity.
The project underscores Kerala's legacy of interfaith harmony, offering a replicable model for other regions grappling with divisiveness. As the renovation progresses, it stands as a testament to the power of compassion and collective action in building a more inclusive society.
