IUML State President Dismisses Concerns Over Community Remarks, Reaffirms Trust in Kerala's Secular Ethos
In a firm response to recent political developments, Panakkad Sadikali Shihab Thangal, the state president of the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), stated on Friday that the party remains unperturbed by remarks from certain community organizations targeting it. Speaking from Kozhikode, Thangal emphasized that IUML places its trust in the secular mindset of the people of Kerala and will steadfastly continue its long-standing tradition of promoting communal harmony.
Addressing SNDP Yogam's Comments and Upholding Secular Values
Thangal was specifically responding to statements made by Vellappally Natesan, the general secretary of the SNDP Yogam, who had remarked that Malappuram district was not anyone's private property. In his rebuttal, Thangal clarified that IUML has always been a staunch advocate of secularism and will never compromise on this principle for the sake of electoral gains or a few votes. He highlighted the party's unwavering commitment to fostering unity and tolerance across communities in Kerala.
Responding to Calls for Unity and Asserting IUML's Relevance
When questioned about the SNDP Yogam's call for unity among various community organizations, which reportedly excluded Muslims, Thangal asserted that no one could sideline IUML. He pointed to the recent entry of a Communist Party of India (Marxist) district committee member from Kollam into IUML as evidence of the party's growing appeal and relevance. Thangal expressed confidence that the general mindset in Kerala is firmly opposed to communalism and divisiveness, making such exclusionary tactics ineffective.
"We are acutely aware that the prevailing sentiment in Kerala is against communalism and divisive politics. We have no concerns about such statements because the people of this state uphold the spirit of communal harmony and tolerance. They cannot be misled by such remarks," Thangal stated emphatically.
Updates on UDF Seat Sharing Talks and Electoral Strategies
Shifting focus to electoral matters, Thangal provided insights into the ongoing seat-sharing discussions within the United Democratic Front (UDF). He mentioned that the front has not yet entered into serious talks but is expected to commence formal discussions within the next two days. When asked about the possibility of IUML and the Congress party swapping seats that both have been losing in recent elections, Thangal indicated that all such issues would be thoroughly discussed within the UDF framework.
The primary focus, he noted, will be on winnability and strategizing to bring the front back to power in the state.
Clarifying Ties with the Welfare Party of India
Regarding the UDF's association with the Welfare Party of India, Thangal clarified that during the local body elections, there were some understandings between candidates from both sides. However, he emphasized that these arrangements were temporary and concluded after the polls, with no ongoing formal alliance affecting IUML's core principles or electoral strategies.
Thangal's statements underscore IUML's confidence in Kerala's secular fabric and its strategic preparations for upcoming electoral battles, reinforcing the party's role as a key player in the state's political landscape.
