JD(S) Plans to Contest at Least 100 Seats in GBA Polls
JD(S) Aims for 100+ Seats in GBA Elections

Janata Dal (Secular) leader H D Kumaraswamy on Tuesday announced that the party is keen on contesting at least 100 seats in the upcoming elections to the Gram Panchayats and other local bodies in Karnataka. The decision comes as part of the party's strategy to strengthen its grassroots presence across the state.

Party's Grassroots Strategy

Speaking to reporters in Bengaluru, Kumaraswamy said that the JD(S) has identified several constituencies where it has a strong support base and will field candidates accordingly. He emphasized that the party aims to leverage its organizational network to secure a significant number of seats in the local body polls, which are crucial for building momentum ahead of future elections.

Focus on Rural Areas

The JD(S) leader highlighted that the party's focus will be on rural and semi-urban areas, where it has traditionally enjoyed considerable support. He noted that the party's candidates will be chosen based on their track record and commitment to public service. Kumaraswamy also urged party workers to begin preparations immediately to ensure a strong showing in the polls.

When asked about alliances, Kumaraswamy did not rule out the possibility of tie-ups with like-minded parties but stressed that the JD(S) would primarily contest independently. He added that the party's primary goal is to emerge as a key player in local governance, which will eventually strengthen its position in state politics.

The announcement comes amid speculation about the JD(S) aligning with other opposition parties for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. However, Kumaraswamy clarified that the local body polls are a separate exercise and the party will focus on them without being distracted by national-level politics.

Political analysts view this move as an attempt by the JD(S) to regain lost ground in Karnataka, especially after its poor performance in the 2023 assembly elections. The party currently holds a limited number of seats in the state legislature and is looking to rebuild its base through grassroots-level contests.
