The garment sector in Karnataka alone employs over four lakh workers, nearly 80 per cent of whom are women. The workers argue that the exemption clause allows employers to pay wages lower than the revised minimum, effectively defeating the purpose of the wage revision.

Protesting workers have demanded that the state government remove the exemption clause, which they say is being exploited by factory owners. They emphasize that the minimum wage revision was meant to improve their living standards, but the clause has rendered it ineffective. Many workers have taken to the streets in cities like Bengaluru, holding placards and chanting slogans against the government's decision.

Since a vast majority of the workforce comprises women, the issue has significant gender implications. The workers have vowed to continue their agitation until their demands are met.
