Karnataka Legislators Allocated Complimentary Cricket Tickets, Stadium Expansion on Agenda

In a significant development for cricket enthusiasts in the political arena, Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar announced on Monday that state legislators will receive complimentary tickets for high-profile cricket matches in Bengaluru. The decision, which aims to balance access with public sentiment, comes after extensive discussions with cricket authorities.

Ticket Allocation Details for Elected Representatives

Speaking to reporters at his Sadashivanagar residence, Shivakumar outlined the new policy. Each legislator will be allotted three complimentary tickets for Indian Premier League (IPL) matches and two for international cricket fixtures held in the city. Additionally, for international games, there is an option to purchase two extra tickets per legislator.

The deputy chief minister clarified that due to high demand, only two tickets could be provided for the season-opening IPL match between Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and Sunrisers Hyderabad, as tickets had already been sold out. "The matter is now closed. Those not interested in obtaining tickets can inform us in writing; there's no compulsion," Shivakumar stated, emphasizing the voluntary nature of the allocation.

Addressing Demands and Public Backlash

This announcement follows demands from some legislators, including Congress MLA Vijayanand Kashappanavar, who had requested four tickets per MLA for IPL matches. Kashappanavar's earlier statement that legislators should not queue up like ordinary citizens sparked a backlash on social media, with fans criticizing what they termed "VIP culture."

In response to calls for a higher quota, Shivakumar defended the current allocation as feasible, noting that other states like Rajasthan, Gujarat, Mumbai, Delhi, and Kolkata distribute 50-60% of tickets to government officials and related entities. "Compared to them, our intervention is minimal," he argued, highlighting Karnataka's relatively modest approach.

No Special Gallery for Legislators

On the issue of a dedicated gallery for legislators and ministers during IPL matches, Shivakumar ruled out any government interference. He left the decision to the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA), stating that the government would not mandate such arrangements, thereby addressing concerns about preferential treatment.

Proposal to Expand Stadium Capacity and New Projects

Beyond ticket allocations, Shivakumar revealed ambitious plans for cricket infrastructure in Karnataka. Discussions have been held to increase the capacity of Chinnaswamy Stadium by another 20,000 seats, boosting it from the current 38,000 spectators. This expansion aims to accommodate growing fan interest and enhance the match-day experience.

Furthermore, talks are ongoing with civic authorities to identify land for new stadium projects. A formal proposal will be submitted to the government for approval. The state has already allocated approximately 25 acres of land to KSCA in Tumakuru and Mysuru, and cabinet approval has been granted for a new multi-discipline stadium at Suryanagar in Bengaluru through the Karnataka Housing Board.

These initiatives underscore the government's commitment to developing sports infrastructure while managing public access to major cricket events in a transparent and equitable manner.
