Karnataka Announces Major Bridge Construction Initiative to Enhance Kerala Connectivity
In a significant infrastructure development move, the Karnataka government has unveiled plans to construct multiple bridges aimed at improving interstate connectivity with neighboring Kerala. Public Works Department Minister Satish Jarkiholi made the announcement following a site inspection in the Dakshina Kannada district.
Focus on Interstate Bridges and Foot-Bridges
During his visit to the proposed Poonadka bridge site in Vitla, accessed via Kamajalu in Manila village, Minister Jarkiholi emphasized that his department would prioritize the construction of interstate bridges. This includes both vehicular bridges and foot-bridges to facilitate smoother movement between the two states.
The minister highlighted that demands for bridges in Sullia and various other locations across Dakshina Kannada have been longstanding concerns from local communities.
Poonadka Bridge: A Five-Decade-Old Demand
The proposed Poonadka bridge represents a particularly historic infrastructure need, with local residents advocating for its construction for at least fifty years. Minister Jarkiholi confirmed that a final decision on this specific project will be made following comprehensive evaluations of technical feasibility and logistical requirements.
"The Karnataka state government will bear the entire financial burden for these bridge projects," the minister assured, putting to rest any concerns about funding arrangements with Kerala.
Funding and Implementation Timeline
Minister Jarkiholi revealed that most infrastructure proposals submitted by Puttur MLA have already received approval. Multiple bridge construction projects are currently underway, alongside ongoing repair work on existing structures.
The State Highway Development Programme is progressing with several works, and the department plans to invite tenders in April to ensure infrastructure protection during the upcoming monsoon season.
Political Context and Funding Allocation
The Public Works Department has sanctioned approximately Rs 80 crore specifically for bridge construction in constituencies represented by BJP MLAs within the district. Minister Jarkiholi addressed allegations of fund shortages from opposition members, suggesting such claims were politically motivated.
"How will they secure votes if they don't make such allegations?" the minister questioned, noting that the same BJP MLAs criticizing funding shortages have simultaneously been conducting foundation ceremonies for development projects in their own constituencies.
Local MLA Acknowledges Progress
Puttur MLA Ashok Kumar Rai acknowledged the minister's practical approach to infrastructure development, confirming that previously promised projects are being implemented. According to Rai, the constituency has received a substantial Rs 250 crore through the Public Works Department for various development initiatives.
This bridge construction initiative represents a significant step toward addressing long-standing connectivity issues between Karnataka and Kerala, potentially transforming regional transportation and economic exchange between the two states.
