A pre-dawn fire tore through the historic heritage market in Kasauli on Monday, causing extensive damage to the over 100-year-old commercial hub. The blaze, which broke out around 3:30 AM, rapidly engulfed eight shops, reducing them to charred shells within minutes and triggering multiple gas cylinder explosions that sent panic rippling through the popular tourist town.
Rapid Spread and Explosions Hamper Firefighting Efforts
The fire spread quickly across the tightly packed wooden structures that characterize the heritage market. Eyewitnesses reported that the situation worsened dramatically when multiple LPG cylinders stored inside eateries exploded one after another, intensifying the inferno and making firefighting operations exceptionally difficult.
Four fire tenders battled the blaze for several hours before finally bringing it under control. They received crucial assistance from Army and Air Force personnel stationed at nearby defence establishments. However, the narrow lanes of the market and closely built shops significantly hampered access, allowing the flames to spread rapidly through the historic area.
Substantial Economic Losses for Local Traders
While no casualties were reported in the incident, local traders suffered devastating economic losses as entire stocks were destroyed in the fire. The affected establishments included:
- Three gift shops catering to tourists
- Four food outlets serving visitors to the hill station
- A sweets shop popular with both locals and tourists
- A medical store serving the community
Bhupender Singh, whose fast food shop was completely gutted in the blaze, revealed that the local kanoongo has estimated the overall loss across all eight shops at approximately Rs 3 crore. Many of these businesses had been serving tourists visiting the picturesque hill station for generations.
Investigation and Immediate Relief Measures
Preliminary findings from officials suggest that a short circuit likely caused the devastating fire, though authorities have emphasized that a detailed probe has been ordered to determine the exact cause with certainty. The local administration responded promptly to the crisis, with officials reaching the spot and announcing immediate relief of Rs 25,000 each for the affected shopkeepers.
