KC Venugopal Alleges Secret CPM-BJP Pact in Kerala Assembly Elections
In a significant development ahead of the Kerala assembly elections, AICC general secretary KC Venugopal on Saturday made explosive allegations of a clandestine agreement between the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and the Bharatiya Janata Party. Speaking to reporters at Nedumbassery airport in Kochi, Venugopal claimed that this "secret pact" is operational in Palakkad and several other constituencies, with details expected to emerge in the coming days.
Strategic Moves and Electoral Dynamics
Venugopal pointed to the Left Democratic Front's decision to field an independent candidate in Palakkad as a strategic maneuver designed to assist the BJP. "LDF's choice of an independent candidate in Palakkad is a calculated move to benefit the BJP. This secret alliance exists in multiple constituencies and will become clearer soon," he asserted. He dismissed criticism over delays in candidate selection, noting that the Congress had finalized its list promptly, while highlighting instances of sitting LDF ministers shifting constituencies as indicative of the volatile political landscape.
Confidence in UDF Victory and Campaign Efforts
Expressing unwavering confidence, Venugopal projected that the United Democratic Front is on track to secure 100 seats in the upcoming polls. He attributed this optimism to a rigorous 12-day intensive campaign spearheaded by senior national leaders. "This election is a mission to end a decade of Left rule in Kerala," he emphasized, adding that leaders who work diligently for party candidates will be considered for significant responsibilities once the UDF forms the government.
Criticism of LDF Campaign and Election Commission
Venugopal mocked the LDF's campaign efforts, citing a minister who failed to commence campaigning even four days after being announced as a candidate, which he argued reflects a lack of confidence within the ruling front. Additionally, he raised serious concerns about the Election Commission's schedule, describing the narrow nomination window as "unprecedented and suspicious." He questioned whether this timeline was part of a larger deal to handicap candidates, leaving them with less than two weeks for effective voter outreach.
Allegations Against Chief Minister and Campaign Practices
The Alappuzha MP also launched a scathing attack on Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, accusing him of shielding individuals implicated in the Sabarimala gold theft case. Venugopal asserted that the people of Kerala have already decided in favor of a UDF victory. When asked about his photographs appearing on campaign posters of various candidates, he clarified that he had not requested such inclusions, describing it as a common practice to feature prominent leaders in election materials.
Venugopal concluded by affirming that all Congress candidates represent the collective leadership of the party, including figures like V D Satheesan and Ramesh Chennithala, underscoring a unified front in the electoral battle.
