Kerala Government Implements Green Protocol for Attukal Pongala Festival
The state government of Kerala has announced a comprehensive green protocol for the upcoming Attukal Pongala festival, scheduled for March 3. This initiative aims to significantly reduce environmental pollution by targeting the use of prohibited single-use items and flex boards during the massive religious event.
Formation of Special Enforcement Squad
In a joint effort, the local self-government department and the District Suchitwa Mission have established a dedicated enforcement squad. This team is tasked with rigorously eliminating the use of banned single-use plastics and other non-biodegradable materials throughout the festival period. According to an official statement, inspections have already been intensified across the district to ensure compliance with the new regulations.
Crackdown on Flex Boards and Awareness Campaigns
To address the widespread issue of flex boards, special inspection teams will conduct thorough checks at flex printing establishments in the district. This move is part of a broader strategy to curb visual pollution and promote sustainable practices.
The District Suchitwa Mission has also unveiled a brochure for the mega campaign titled 'Devotion with Cleanliness First', which was launched by District Collector Anu Kumari. This campaign includes:
- Awareness classes for individuals and groups planning to distribute food or operate temporary stalls during the festival.
- Multi-level outreach programs focusing on residence associations, schools, and places of worship to foster community involvement.
- A vehicle equipped with LED displays that will travel through urban areas, spreading the message of cleanliness and environmental responsibility.
These measures are designed to ensure that the Attukal Pongala festival not only upholds its spiritual significance but also sets a benchmark for eco-friendly celebrations in Kerala.
