Kochi Corporation Initiates Compensation Disbursement for Konthuruthy Residents

The Kochi Corporation is set to commence the disbursement of compensation for the rehabilitation of Konthuruthy residents this Saturday. This significant move follows a crucial meeting held on Wednesday between corporation authorities and the affected residents, during which the residents submitted various essential documents required to receive the compensation.

Compensation Details and Distribution Plan

A total of Rs 14 lakh will be allocated to the families that have already submitted the necessary documentation. For those who have not yet completed the submission process, the corporation will provide an initial payment of Rs 9 lakh. The remaining Rs 5 lakh will be disbursed once all required documents are submitted. This structured approach ensures that residents receive timely financial support while adhering to procedural requirements.

Documentation and Resident Participation

During the meeting, a total of 108 families attended, with most submitting critical documents such as ration cards, possession certificates for land, and no-dues certificates from the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) and the Kerala Water Authority (KWA). Additionally, residents formally submitted requests seeking compensation, as confirmed by sources within the corporation. This collaborative effort highlights the residents' active engagement in the rehabilitation process.

Legal Approvals and Eviction Plans

The corporation's actions are backed by legal approvals, having recently informed the High Court about its plans to distribute compensation and proceed with evictions. The court has granted approval to move forward with these initiatives. This step follows strict orders from the High Court to rehabilitate the residents, prompting the local body to take decisive action to comply with judicial directives.

Next Steps and Implementation

In addition to compensation disbursement, the corporation will also undertake measures to evict residents from the shores of the river, as part of the broader rehabilitation strategy. This comprehensive plan aims to address both the immediate financial needs of the residents and the long-term environmental and legal considerations associated with their relocation.
