A late-night bus journey turned traumatic for passengers when a Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) bus met with an accident near Kochi, resulting in head injuries to a 55-year-old man. The incident occurred on Friday night as the bus was navigating the approach to a bridge.
Details of the Kumbalam Bridge Incident
The accident took place around 10 pm on Friday near the Kumbalam area. The bus, operating on the Guruvayur to Punaloor route, was crossing a bridge when the driver reportedly failed to notice a slight elevation or height difference on the road surface. This caused the vehicle to suddenly jolt violently.
According to police accounts, Job K V, a resident of Cherthala, was seated at the back of the bus. The force of the jolt was so severe that he was literally thrown from his seat. His head struck a steel rod inside the bus, leading to significant head injuries.
Immediate Aftermath and Medical Response
Acting swiftly, the bus driver rushed the injured passenger to a nearby hospital for urgent medical attention. A hospital spokesperson provided an update on the condition of those hurt.
The 55-year-old, Job K V, underwent a CT scan for further evaluation of his head injuries. Another passenger, identified as 32-year-old Rahile K E from Eramalloor, also suffered minor injuries in the same incident. The medical team is monitoring their conditions.
Concerns Over Road Infrastructure and Safety
This accident has brought focus back to the state of road infrastructure and driver alertness, especially on bridges and approach roads. The police description of the bridge as 'slightly elevated' points to a potential hazard that was not adequately signposted or noticed.
Such incidents raise critical questions about regular road safety audits and the need for clear markings or warnings at spots with sudden changes in road level. Ensuring passenger safety on long-distance bus routes remains a paramount concern for transport authorities.
