A 17-year-old youth was stabbed to death inside his grocery shop in the New Market area of Kolkata on Wednesday morning, in an apparent fallout of romantic jealousy. The victim, identified as Deepak Gupta, succumbed to his injuries at NRS Medical College and Hospital a few hours after the attack.
Details of the Incident
According to police reports, the incident occurred between 8:29 AM and 8:30 AM inside Gupta Store, located at 8, Amiyo Hazra Lane. The accused, Shashi Tevar (25), a resident of the same locality, entered the shop and allegedly stabbed Gupta multiple times in the throat with a knife before fleeing the scene.
The victim's brother and a friend immediately rushed him to GD Hospital for first aid. From there, he was transferred to NRS Hospital for surgery. Despite medical efforts, Gupta passed away at 12:05 PM.
Motive Behind the Attack
Investigating officers revealed that Tevar was infatuated with a local girl and resented Gupta talking to her. Despite Tevar warning the teenager to maintain his distance, Gupta went to Nicco Park's water park with the girl and mutual friends on Tuesday. This amusement trip reportedly enraged Tevar, prompting the premeditated fatal assault on Gupta on Wednesday morning.
The accused had purchased a knife from an adjoining shop before attacking the victim. New Market Police have initiated a murder case against the accused, and further investigations are underway.
