Kolkata's World Cup Fever: Streets, Rooftops, and Kites Unite Fans

Every four years, Kolkata undergoes a remarkable transformation. Streets become canvases, rooftops turn into viewing galleries, and entire neighborhoods live and breathe football. From Patuli to Fakir Chakrabarty Lane's 'FIFA Para' and Gopal Nagar, the city is fully immersed in the World Cup spirit.

Community Celebrations in Patuli

"It's like a big festival; everyone is watching the late-night matches together," says Subhojit Das, a club member of the Sports Lovers Association in Patuli. Despite the rain, many fans, both artists and non-artists, have come together to complete all the World Cup-themed artwork. Preparation in Patuli began about 15 days ago, with around 80 members—mostly Brazil and Argentina supporters—working after office hours until midnight. They watch World Cup matches together and also celebrate cricket in the same manner. When it rains, they cook together picnic-style.

Artistic Dedication in FIFA Para

In north Kolkata's 'FIFA Para', art meets obsession. "Work started a week ago," says mural artist Shreya Bose, who has been working until 3:30 am sometimes. She notes that this World Cup is emotional as it is the last one for Lionel Messi, Neymar Jr, and Cristiano Ronaldo. An artist paints a portrait of Messi on a street in Patuli, capturing the fervor.

Kite-Making Soars

At a kite store in Hatibagan, owner Subhojit Gorai, who is also a kite-maker, is witnessing football fever soar. "I've made kites representing 32 countries," he says. But the favorites are obvious: "Brazil and Argentina are the most popular. I've sold over 100 Brazil kites in a day," he adds.

Changing Participation

More girls are participating now; earlier, late-night work meant hesitation, but with everyone around, it feels safer, says Aishwarya Kundu, an artist. The World Cup has brought the city together in a unique celebration of sport and community.
