Koppal Pollution Protest: Opposition Leader Vows to Raise Issue in Legislative Council
Koppal Pollution Protest: Leader to Raise Issue in Council

Chalavadi Narayanaswamy, the Leader of Opposition in the Legislative Council, has made a firm commitment. He will raise the issue of the ongoing indefinite sit-in protest in Koppal during the upcoming special session on January 22.

A Protest Against Severe Pollution

The sit-in, now in its 78th day as of Friday, targets severe pollution affecting Koppal, Bhagyanagar, and approximately twenty surrounding villages. Protesters blame increasing industrial activities for the environmental crisis.

Narayanaswamy personally participated in the demonstration. He confirmed that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) supports this public movement.

Widespread Support for the Cause

The District Bachao Andolan Samiti and an environmental protection forum are leading the indefinite sit-in. They have established their protest at the premises of the Koppal Municipal Corporation.

This environmental struggle has garnered significant backing. Various religious leaders, numerous organisations, political parties, elected representatives, and the general public have all expressed their solidarity with the protesters.

Government Accused of Favoring Factories

Before departing for Ballari to join a BJP rally scheduled for January 17, Narayanaswamy visited the protest site. He insisted the state government must stop actions that work against public interest.

"The state government is behaving like a representative for the factories," he alleged. "These factories are responsible for the severe pollution. That is why, despite 78 days of continuous protest, the government has not addressed the people's demands."

Plans for Continued Action

Narayanaswamy stated he will continue supporting the struggle after raising the matter in the Legislative Council. He also criticised state ministers for blaming the Union Government.

"It is inappropriate for the chief minister and the industries minister to shift blame to the Centre," he said. "The state government must first withdraw the permission granted for the proposed large private factory. Only after that will we consider necessary actions at the central level."

Protest Leaders Vow to Escalate

Professor Allamaprabhu Bettadur, convener of the Joint Action Forum, announced a resolution. The forum plans to escalate their struggle further to achieve their goals.

Abhinava Gavisiddheshwara Swami of the Gavi Mutt also voiced strong support. The seer stated that the establishment of new factories must be stopped. Pollution from existing factories should also cease immediately. He urged the government to respect his goodwill and the public's plea.

Prominent Figures Join the Demonstration

The protest saw participation from several notable individuals. BJP state executive committee member Dr. Basavaraj Kyavater attended. District SC cell president Ganesh Horattnal was present. Other participants included Mallikarjun Gonal, S.B. Rajur, Manjunath Gondabal, and Rajesh Sasimath.

The collective action underscores the deep community concern over industrial pollution in the Koppal region. All eyes are now on the special legislative session scheduled for January 22.
