KTR Slams BJP Over Women's Reservation Bill Failure, Cites Delimitation Link
KTR Criticizes BJP for Women's Reservation Bill Setback

BRS Leader KTR Holds BJP Responsible for Women's Reservation Bill Failure

In a sharp critique from Hyderabad, BRS working president KT Rama Rao has squarely blamed the Bharatiya Janata Party for the recent setback of the Women's Reservation Bill in the Lok Sabha. Rao asserted that the ruling party's decision to link the legislation with the contentious delimitation issue directly led to its derailment, despite widespread cross-party support for women's political representation.

Political Maneuvering Alleged in Bill's Demise

KTR emphasized that all political formations, including his own BRS, had extended unequivocal backing to the principle of women's reservation. However, he accused the BJP of employing calculated political tactics that ultimately sabotaged the bill's passage. "The BJP deliberately created unnecessary complications by tying women's reservation to delimitation," Rao stated, "thereby denying women their rightful representation in Parliament."

The BRS leader argued that reservations could have been implemented immediately within the existing framework of 543 Lok Sabha seats, but the ruling party chose to politicize what should have been a straightforward empowerment measure. This approach, according to KTR, resulted in the loss of a historic opportunity for advancing gender equality in Indian politics.

Southern States Disadvantaged by Delimitation Link

Rao further alleged that the BJP's strategy of connecting women's reservations with delimitation was specifically designed to disadvantage southern states. He claimed this ignored legitimate concerns raised by multiple regional parties and could potentially reduce southern representation in Parliament once delimitation occurs.

"The people of India have witnessed the BJP's political drama enacted in the name of women's reservations," KTR declared. He charged that the party exploited the issue for electoral advantage while ultimately betraying women across the nation. The BRS leader demanded that the BJP immediately introduce a fresh Women's Reservation Bill without any delimitation linkage and ensure its implementation from upcoming elections to demonstrate genuine commitment.

Complexities of Delimitation and Telangana's Rights

On the broader delimitation question, KTR warned that the current approach could diminish southern states' parliamentary representation and urged the central government to conduct extensive consultations before proceeding. He suggested that recent parliamentary developments should serve as a cautionary lesson against pushing unilateral decisions on sensitive national matters.

Rao also reiterated that increasing the number of assembly seats in Telangana, as stipulated by the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act, constitutes the state's legitimate right. He questioned why the Centre had increased seats in Jammu and Kashmir and Assam without linking them to nationwide delimitation, while simultaneously neglecting Telangana's similar claims.

The BRS working president demanded that the Centre introduce separate legislation during the current Parliament session to augment Telangana's assembly seats before 2028, completely independent of national delimitation processes. This move, he argued, would address historical commitments while avoiding the complications that doomed the Women's Reservation Bill.
